The Peloponnesian Challenge

In 2016, our mother Company Arcas Travel Services and our CEO Christos Panagiotopoulos organized a unique race much different than any other: a group of cyclists versus a Formula 18 racing catamaran covering a route all around Peloponnese, Greece.

The aim of this event was the promotion of Peloponnese as an alternative tourism destination and more specifically cycling and sailing. The event was organized by Arcas Travel Services with the support of the Peloponnese Tourism Organization and several other sponsors. It lasted 10 days and there was live coverage from the media and daily local events.

The group of cyclists consisted of the team Artisan from the UK, with Alistair McLean to be the leader while the catamaran was flagged as team Discover-Peloponnese and consisted of our CEO Christos Panagiotopoulos and his crew representing Greece.

The cyclists started from Ancient Olympia, when the catamaran departed from Olympia's closest port, Katakolo. Both teams headed north and following the coast they had to complete a full circle around Peloponnese and finish at the start point. There were no rules except following the coastline at all times and racing only during daylight. Both teams had to overcome the weather conditions, exhaustion and of course several unlucky moments that couldn't be missed in a hard race like this. But the overall experience was the best reward for both teams and viewers.

Passing by landscapes of amazing beauty such as Nafplio, Monemvassia, Kalamata, Pylos, Elafonissos, Spetses, Hydra and destinations of huge historical importance like Ancient Olympia, the theatre of Epidaurus, Methoni and Koroni, the event was succesfully completed. Seeveal months later, a small documentary was created to introduce to the public this incomparable beauty of the area and show the unique advantages of Peloponnese as a cycling and sailing destination.
